For Hispanic Heritage Month, I am writing about Ellen Ochoa. Ellen Ochoa is a Latina woman who was born May 10 1958 in Los Angeles. She had received a bachelor of science degree in physics from San Diego State University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1980. Ochoa had two sons and she became an engineer. This is when Ochoa decide she wanted to go to space. She was selected by NASA in 1990 and in 1991 became the world's first Hispanic female astronaut.
On April 8, 1993, Ellen Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman in the world to go into space. Ochoa was on the Discovery shuttle for nine days. Ochoa had been researching information about Earth’s ozone layer. She had been a veteran of four space flights, logging more than 950 hours in space. Some of her assignments were flight software and computer hardware development and robotics development, testing, and training. Ochoa had conquered a lot she had served as the Chief of the Astronaut Office and lead spacecraft communicator in Mission Control. Ellen Ochoa is currently the director of Flight Crew Operations at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. In conclusion, Ellen Ochoa makes me strive to be a better me. She shows women that we have the same knowledge as men and even more. She proves if you work hard and are dedicated you could do anything. I am happy that I got to learn her story and understand that it wasn’t an easy job to go to space. This shows how brave and confident she was in herself. She inspires me to have the same confidence and braveness she had doing this job.

The person I chose for Hispanic heritage month is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She is one of the leading voices in politics for Hispanics. She was born in the Bronx in 1988 and raised by two Puerto rican parents. She had moved out of the Bronx to the suburbs and went to Boston College. Sadly her father had died of lung cancer in her second year of college. After graduating from Boston College she decided to return to the Bronx to run for senator Bernie Sanders in 2016 for the democrats. Before she served she was an activist and worked as a waitress and bartender. Not only is she a Hispanic that ran for senator she is also a woman which makes her even stronger. She has been someone who I’ve been looking up to. She had been the first to challenge Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley, the first to do so since 2004, and pulled off a surprise primary win in June 2018.
Alexandria Cortez had become the youngest woman to serve in the United States Congress. These were her words once she won “I’m hoping that this is a beginning,” said at her victory party in 2018. “That we can continue this organizing and continue what we’ve learned.”Since she won she has had some great ideas like co-sponsoring the Green New Deal package to combat climate change. She advocates for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice for all. She has become one of the most famous Congresswomen. She was the second most talked-about politician in America after Donald Trump. In conclusion, Alexandra Cortez proves that it doesn’t matter if you are a woman or of any ethnicity you can do anything if you believe in yourself and work hard for it. She is a great role model for young women to show us that we as women can be politicians and nothing could stop us. She is representing the future of politics and how they will build support and then use that support to accomplish their political goals. She is still striving today to be a better congresswoman. She is someone I truly look up too. |
