This month we are celebrating national impaired driving prevention. Especially during the holidays, many people seem to drive when they have been intoxicated. We are trying to prevent this so others can stop getting hurt. The most celebrated holidays in December are Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and these are the most dangerous. In 2018 drunk driving crashes claimed 108 lives in those two days alone. This is why the Mothers against drunk driving picked December. This month has been the national impaired driving prevention for 39 consecutive years.
In the month of December 2018 over 839 people died in alcohol-related crashes. Drunk driving deaths are usually only around a third of all traffic fatalities; it had increased to nearly 50 percent on December 24 and December 31. It is devastating for the families that lose one of their loved ones over something that could have been prevented. Young adults are at the greatest risk for driving impaired. In the average year, 30 million Americans drive drunk, and 10 million Americans drive impaired by drugs. These are all deaths that we can prevent if we act more responsibly. There's are all caused by someone's bad choice to drive instead of asking someone to pick them up or taking an uber. These crashes could have all been prevented. When it comes to driving while being intoxicated you should never do it. If you know you are going to be drinking you should have a plan for someone to pick you up. Especially during the holidays, be responsible and protect others from situations that can definitely be prevented. Not only in this month should we prevent these types of accidents and not drive intoxicated, we have to remember this every day. link https://www.madd.org/december-is-national-impaired-driving-prevention-month I am most thankful for my family. They strive for me to do my best abilities in everything I do. For example in school, they don't let me give up and make me want to always have my grades at their very best. Another example is in soccer they push me to be the best player I could be and always focus on new techniques in learning. They are always there to count on and always have my back. I don't know what I would do in my life if I didn't have my mom, dad, and sister by my side. They are what truly make me happy in my life.
I am also thankful for soccer. Soccer is a place where I could be free and relieved from my stress. It helps me be a better person and is the sport that I love. I can always count on being in a better mood as soon as I play. I wouldn't be able to play soccer if it wasn't for my mom and dad. They have always supported me playing and always gi=ot me the extra training to be a better player. I wouldn't be the player I am today without them. I am thankful for how I have kept the same love for soccer since I was five years old. This will forever be my sport. I am very thankful for music. Music always puts me in a better mood as soon as I listen to it. It is something that can change the mood in a second. Depending on if I need to get hyped to being happy it is always there to help you feel better. Music helps me contrast in do better in whatever activity I'm tryna to focus on. I am glad we have music. It has helped me a lot through any situation I've ever been in. I am also very thankful for my dog. My dog always brightens my mood and brings me comfort when I need it. She is always something to look forward to when I get home. She is the most caring and energized dog I know. My dog never fails to give me love when I need it. I am so happy she is part of my family and that I can be her owner. I wouldn't trade my dog for anything in the world. I am thankful for my friends. They are the people who I could always count on to have fun and be myself with. They never judge anything I do and are always there for me. They find a way to always make me smile and have a good day. My friends strive for me to be the best person I can be. They help me make the right decisions. They help me with school and sports to do the best I possibly can. They are always there to support me in anything I do. They are true friends. This month we are honoring national bullying prevention. Research has shown about 20% of students nationwide from ages 12-18 get bullied. Bullying causes many children to have mental illness and breakdowns. We need to start preventing and focusing on those kids who need help. Over 16,000 kids stay home from being bullied. Bullying causes trauma for some kids later on in their lives.
We need to help the bullies. Bullies usually bully because something is happening in their lives that their mad about or their not happy with themselves. If we are able to help those who feel like that we will be preventing bullying. Many people are also afraid to tell someone they’re getting bullied. We need to stop judging and help those who need it. The most common bullying is verbal harassment, followed by social harassment, physical bullying, and cyberbullying. Any type of bullying is not good. A lot of people nowadays bully each other from the internet and social media. I feel this is the worse type of bullying. This bullying hurts others and sometimes you don't even know who says these horrible things that are about you. It is easier for the bully to hide behind a screen than say it to that person’s face. This had led many kids to suicide and depression. People often feel they don’t have support or someone they trust that they could talk too. I feel the best way we could prevent bullying is by providing people children and teens could talk to. For Hispanic Heritage Month, I am writing about Ellen Ochoa. Ellen Ochoa is a Latina woman who was born May 10 1958 in Los Angeles. She had received a bachelor of science degree in physics from San Diego State University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1980. Ochoa had two sons and she became an engineer. This is when Ochoa decide she wanted to go to space. She was selected by NASA in 1990 and in 1991 became the world's first Hispanic female astronaut.
On April 8, 1993, Ellen Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman in the world to go into space. Ochoa was on the Discovery shuttle for nine days. Ochoa had been researching information about Earth’s ozone layer. She had been a veteran of four space flights, logging more than 950 hours in space. Some of her assignments were flight software and computer hardware development and robotics development, testing, and training. Ochoa had conquered a lot she had served as the Chief of the Astronaut Office and lead spacecraft communicator in Mission Control. Ellen Ochoa is currently the director of Flight Crew Operations at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. In conclusion, Ellen Ochoa makes me strive to be a better me. She shows women that we have the same knowledge as men and even more. She proves if you work hard and are dedicated you could do anything. I am happy that I got to learn her story and understand that it wasn’t an easy job to go to space. This shows how brave and confident she was in herself. She inspires me to have the same confidence and braveness she had doing this job. The person I chose for Hispanic heritage month is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She is one of the leading voices in politics for Hispanics. She was born in the Bronx in 1988 and raised by two Puerto rican parents. She had moved out of the Bronx to the suburbs and went to Boston College. Sadly her father had died of lung cancer in her second year of college. After graduating from Boston College she decided to return to the Bronx to run for senator Bernie Sanders in 2016 for the democrats. Before she served she was an activist and worked as a waitress and bartender. Not only is she a Hispanic that ran for senator she is also a woman which makes her even stronger. She has been someone who I’ve been looking up to. She had been the first to challenge Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley, the first to do so since 2004, and pulled off a surprise primary win in June 2018.
Alexandria Cortez had become the youngest woman to serve in the United States Congress. These were her words once she won “I’m hoping that this is a beginning,” said at her victory party in 2018. “That we can continue this organizing and continue what we’ve learned.”Since she won she has had some great ideas like co-sponsoring the Green New Deal package to combat climate change. She advocates for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice for all. She has become one of the most famous Congresswomen. She was the second most talked-about politician in America after Donald Trump. In conclusion, Alexandra Cortez proves that it doesn’t matter if you are a woman or of any ethnicity you can do anything if you believe in yourself and work hard for it. She is a great role model for young women to show us that we as women can be politicians and nothing could stop us. She is representing the future of politics and how they will build support and then use that support to accomplish their political goals. She is still striving today to be a better congresswoman. She is someone I truly look up too. |
